Humanums vs Turnitin Clarity: the school watching the writing, or the writer keeping the proof.

Turnitin Clarity and Humanums agree on the important thing: the writing process is better evidence than a score computed from finished text. They disagree on who holds that evidence. Clarity is a writing space your institution licenses and your instructor configures. Humanums is a certificate you own and can show to anyone.

Humanums editorial·
Quick answer

Turnitin Clarity is a composition space inside a school's learning management system. Students write an assignment there, and instructors can review pasted text, writing time and a playback of the draft history. Humanums records behavioral signals while anyone writes, in its own editor or through a Chrome extension, and issues a signed certificate with a public verification page. Clarity serves the institution's review; Humanums serves the writer, in and out of school.

01

Clarity only exists where a school licenses it and an instructor sets up a Clarity assignment. You cannot open it on your own.

02

It observes only what happens inside its own writing space. Work drafted elsewhere has no Clarity record.

03

Humanums works for any writing, at any school or none, and produces evidence the writer keeps after the course ends.

§01

What Clarity is

Clarity is Turnitin's answer to the problem with AI detection scores. Instead of guessing from a finished essay, it gives students a place to write the essay, with the instructions and rubric beside them, across as many sessions as they need. Instructors can then review how the work came together: what was pasted, how long it took, and a playback of the draft history. An optional AI assistant can be switched on per assignment, and its use is visible to the instructor.

Whether AI writing detection appears alongside it depends on what the institution licenses. UCLA, which explored Clarity over two terms in 2026, told students in its sample syllabus language that the tool does not detect AI writing and does not monitor anything outside the Clarity writing space.

§02

The part that is the same

Both tools rest on the same idea: evidence collected while someone writes beats a probability estimated afterwards. A detector looks at a finished essay and guesses. A process record shows the essay being made, pauses and false starts included. We think that idea is right, and it is good to see the largest vendor in academic integrity move toward it.

§03

The part that is different: who owns the record

In Clarity, the record belongs to the course. It exists because an instructor asked for it, it is reviewed inside the institution's systems, and it answers the institution's question. That is appropriate for what it is, an oversight tool for graded work.

It also means the record is not yours to use. If you are flagged in a course that did not use Clarity, there is no Clarity history to point to. If you wrote the essay in Google Docs, Clarity saw none of it. If you want to show a scholarship committee, an editor or an employer that a writing sample is your own, Clarity is not something you can hand them.

A Humanums certificate is the reverse arrangement. You start it, it is bound to the exact text you certify, and it lives at a public URL you can share with anyone, for as long as you like.

§04

Using both

If your instructor sets a Clarity assignment, write it in Clarity. That is the process they have chosen, and it is reasonable. Humanums is for everything else: courses that rely on a detector instead, writing you do outside a course, and any situation where you want evidence you control before anyone asks for it.

If you have already been flagged, the evidence you have is whatever exists now: version history, drafts, notes. Our free appeal letter template helps you present it. Going forward, a certificate means the question has an answer before it is asked.

Frequently asked

Quick answers.

Does Turnitin Clarity track my writing outside the assignment?

According to UCLA's guidance for its Clarity exploration, no: it does not monitor anything you do outside the Clarity writing space. It records what happens while you write in that space.

Does Turnitin Clarity detect AI?

It depends on your institution. Clarity itself shows how the writing developed. Turnitin's AI writing detection is a separate capability that may or may not be licensed alongside it. UCLA's deployment stated that it did not detect AI writing.

Can I use Turnitin Clarity on my own?

No. Students reach Clarity through an assignment their instructor creates in the school's learning management system. Humanums needs only an account, and the free plan includes three certifications a month.

What can my instructor see in Clarity?

Turnitin and institutions that use it describe pasted text, total writing time, a playback of the draft history, and use of the built-in AI assistant if it is enabled.

What does a Humanums certificate not prove?

It does not identify which person was typing, and it does not prove no AI was consulted while you were thinking. It shows the certified text was composed with human pacing, pauses and revisions in a recorded session, and that it has not changed since.
